Script – Success

Success:

Two friends, best friends since Elementary School discover that High School is a different animal as far as success goes. One friend succeeds at everything, is popular, etc, and the other is forgettable. The rivalry builds as the school year goes on, until the unpopular student produces a photo on facebook that has the two friends as elementary students. At the end, both students are unpopular.

Part 1:
Elementary – Middle School: Montage of school pictures, music, camera movements, etc. – Keirstyn
Part 2:
Freshman Year: School begins, they see each other, eat lunch, etc, on the first few days, then begin split apart. – Levi
Part 3:
One rises in popularity, the other struggles, socially and academically.
One student posts picture on Facebook of the two in Junior High or Elementary School. – Lacey
Part 4:
One’s popularity unravels, the other finds out about the other posting the photo, friends are reunited, have it out, then discover the true meaning of friendship. – Strong

  1. Fade in:
    Int. Cafeteria- day
A group of friends are standing in a circle, with one girl leading the conversation and making everyone laugh. The girl next to her is her best friend. She pretends to laugh, and then looks up at her so called best friend. She fades away into a montage of her memories from their childhood, when being best friends was easier.
    EXT. OPEN FIELD- DAY
A young fair haired girl walks up to a girl with dark hair and hands her a flower. The dark haired girl takes the flower.
    Fair haired girl
We’re going to be best friends.
She grabs the dark haired girl’s hand and they walk away. A camera seems to take a snapshot of them walking away, and the picture falls away into a scrapbook full of others. The camera scans over several shots of the two girls. There is a shot of the fair haired girl holding a small trophy, with the dark haired girl hugging her and smiling. Another shows them on the last day of school, on either sides of their teacher. The teacher is leaning more towards the fair haired girl, but both girls have equally big smiles. As the pages continue turning, the girls are getting older in the pictures. One thing stays the same in each of the photos; the fair haired girl is extremely accomplished at everything she does, while the dark haired girl seems to just be along for the ride. Her smile fades more and more in each picture, but still holds on tight to the fair haired girl. There is a picture of the two girls on the first day of high school; the camera zooms in and the picture comes to life.

I was thinking about adding more to the scrapbook idea, with more pictures ‘coming to life’ in a way. To make it longer, because obviously it’s quite short. Plus there isn’t really a sense of personality of both of the girls yet.

    1. Oh and I was just using fair haired girl and dark haired girl to differentiate, since we didn’t have names yet.

    2. I’m not sure how we could show them slowly getting older, the way you think. unless you were actually friends in real life, you wouldn’t have pictures with each other when you’re younger. we could get elementary pictures of you guys though. just need two little girls (siblings hopefully) that look a little like you both.

      1. Great opening, very well-written. I think if we found two little girls to record their voices and then had their voiced go over the photos of the girls, a combination of these two could work, and would be very effective.

  2. I can talk to some of the younger girls in my 4h group and maybe they would be willing to help us out with this.

The two girls are laughing and running around in the backyard, when [either Lacey or I] turns the hose on [the other]. [whoever was sprayed by the hose] flops down on the grass in defeat. 10. Fade In:
    Int. School day
We open with a wide shot of the den, with teenagers filling the shot, under the wolf. We hear snippets of conversation among the din of hundreds of voices.,
    VOICE
Oh my god, did you see that picture that Katie put online, they are such dorks.
    Voice
She is so cool but her friend is such a dork
    VOICE
I know, who ever thought those two would be friends
    VOICE
I guess they are both dorks.
    EXT. School day
Open with a wide shot of Keristyn walking around school. Cut to POV shot of Keirstyn walking, no dialog, just shots of people pointing and laughing. Camera tilts down to her shirt, nothing on it, looks down at her pants, nothing there either.

Music changes from a sweet violen concierto to a darker feel, the more she walks the more people point and laugh, the shot gets all fish eye, and the camera pushes closer until the entire frame is filled with people pointing and laughing at the camera. Finally she goes up to a girl she knows, holds out her arm, grabs her by the shoulder, and is about to speak when she looks down, and there, on an iPhone is the photo, with hundreds of comments.Everyone continues to point and laugh and the shot fades out.

    INT. Strong’s class day.
Both girls are in the same class, both turn to look at each other, both look away.
Keirstyn(controlling the tears)Mr Strong, can I use the bathroom.
    STRONG(Senses that something is wrong)Sure!
Back to a Wide shot, medium close up of Lacey turned around, looking over at Keristyn’s empty chair.
    LACEY
Strong, can I use the bathroom.
    STRONG
Sure. (He looks over at Keirstyn’s empty chair.) Uh, wait until Keirstyn gets back.A few people, laugh, in on the joke. Strong just looks confused. Cross cut shots of the picture, the clock’s second hand, after a bit, she gets up and runs out of the room. Where we switch to a POV shot of LACEY moving down the hall. Around the corner, there’s KEIRSTYN, on her phone looking at the picture, her eyes are red from crying.

    KEIRSTYN
You don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to see this picture gone during the last few days
    LACEY
I know, I’m sorry, I guess I wanted you back, I wanted who I was, who we were, back.
    KEIRSTYN
But that’s not possible, I mean I’m not the same, you are not the same.
    LACEY
But in that picture we are, we are different now looking back, were both different, so were kinda the same too, you know.
    KEIRSTYN
I have been so horribleto you, all I wanted was to be cool, to be popular, or whatever, I didn’t want to become somebody I’m not just to have friends. I really don’t know what I’m doing and I’m really lost, and I was really horrrible and I’m sorry.
    LACEY
But I’m the one who put the picture of us up oniine, I destroyed your seocial life, I didn’t have anything to destroy.
    KEIRSTYN
Which was why you did it.Which was why I did it.
    KEIRSTYN
To bring us both together, back, like we were, the same.
    LACEY
Strong’s probably called security on us by now.

Strong walks out of the classroom, see’s them at the endo f the hall. Walks towards the two of them.
    STRONG
LACEY, I told you to wait. And KEIRSTYN, you left class forever ago.
    LACEY
Oh, she forgot to tell you, we were rehearsing our lines.
    STRONG
    Yeah, for what project.
    LACEY
A video we’re working on, about friendship. It sounds kinda lame, but its pretty important.
    STRONG
    Sounds good, what’s it about?
    KEIRSTYN
Well it’s about these two friends, in middle school.FADE OUT
