For our first group project you will work in groups of no more than two. You will write a 2-3 minute scene that is a conversation between at least two people from multiple camera angles. This means that you shoot the scene several times, from different camera angles. Use the video tutorial above for guidance as to how to edit a conversation from multiple camera angles.

  • Have a fade in at the beginning, and a fade out at the end.
  • Capture clean, quality sound.
  • Use any of the tutorials we have currently viewed for help on these.
  • Use the rule of thirds.
  • Use the 180 degree rule.
  • Do not have any copyrighted material, everything must be copyright cleared.

Next Video Challenge: Low Key Lighting: 30 Second Character Monologue

lowkeytut-1

For the next Video Project, you will each, INDIVIDUALLY, do a 30 second character sketch using Low Key Light. You will need to use the studio to do this.

Your video will feature a character telling you about their life, in 30 seconds. Use the low light to compliment the content of what the character says.

Example.

INT. KITCHEN. NIGHT

The shot opens with a wide shot of a woman sitting on a stool in a dark room. Light crosses her face on one side. The following is a letter she has written to her husband.

CLAIRE:

It’s the kids, Michael, you never made them a priority. You went on and on about personal responsibility, but you were too busy making money to pay attention to the two things you should’ve paid attention to. And for that we are over. You’ve done this, not me, not James, not Simon, but you. I really wish you could see what you’ve done, and apologize for it, but I know better than that. I’m writing this to you now to clear myself of any guilt or wrong doing. It will take a long time for you to see this, but one day, a long time from now, you will.

Don’t try to call me, don’t try to text me, the phone’s been dumped and left here for you to sort this out.

The monologue should reveal much of what is happening in a FICTIONAL STORY THAT YOU MAKE UP. For 30 seconds of video, make sure the script is long enough.

KEEP IT ON ONE SHOT, WITH A SLOW ZOOM.

You will be graded on the following:

  • Composition of the shot. This includes Rule of Thirds.
  • The quality of lighting a low key, or low lit shot.
  • The quality of script, how engaging the monologue is to the audience.
  • How well the camera zooms in.
  • How well the music lines up with the action.
  • Fade in Fade Out.

3O second lighting challenge is due on 12/17, Friday before break. THIS IS ONLY 30 SECONDS OF VIDEO.

RESPOND TO THIS POST WITH A Character’s name and the situation they are in to get you started. POST THIS TO THIS POST AS A COMMENT.

Music Video – Final Video Project

For the Music Video – Final Project, you will create a 3-5 minute story to accompany a song of your choosing. The song must be school appropriate. No bleeping out words either, if the song has one or two curse words, we can work with fading out the lyrics here and there, but too much is too much!

The Video will be graded on the following:

Lighting – Is the subject well lit, or does the image look dark and murky?

Sound – Can the viewer hear the song and is it not too loud?

Composition – Is the rule of thirds being used, what kind of angles.

Shot Variety – Is the entire video shot from one angle or is there a variety of shots?

Editing & Pacing – Does the video flow well or does it seem choppy?

Story – Does the story match the song, and is the story satisfying?

In addition to the criteria above, the project must contain the following.

  1. Five seconds of black video (File/New/ Black Video) at the start and finish of the video.
  2. A title at the beginning with the name of the song and the artist.
  3. Must have a fade in at the beginning and a fade out at the end – Transitions/Dissolve/Fade to Black.
  4. Must have a credit roll, Title/Default Roll – with the following information – Song title and artist, editor, lighting,
  5. sound, written by, producer, director.

The Music Video will be posted to youtube or vimeo with the link copy and pasted to his page on or before June 16th, 2014. THIS WILL BE A GROUP PROJECT. POST YOUR IDEAS ON WHAT SONG YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO AND SIGN UP FOR GROUPS THE WAY YOU’VE DONE ALL SEMESTER. POST IDEAS HERE.

MP3 Files can be found in my pick up box. Or provided by the director.(you)hhscte/astrong/pick up box/shortcut to mp3/mp3

THIS PROJECT IS NOT FOR SENIORS. YOU WON’T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO WORK ON THIS.

Video 2:New Group Project: Non-Linear Storytelling

The Hours is a perfect example of non-linear storytelling, that is a story that doesn’t go from beginning to middle to end, but rather jumps around a lot, so you might start right before the ending then go to the beginning then the middle and so on. Examples of this in movies are:

  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Pulp Fiction
  • Memento
  • Inception
  • The Prestige

4-6 minutes, script will be 12-18 pages long. And will tell a story out of order.

In groups of two – three people, produce a 3-5 minute documentary on an interesting student or staff member at HHS. THE DOCUMENTARY MUST BE TRUE. ALL CONTENT MUST BE COPYRIGHT CLEARED.

USE freeplaymusic for music.

Think about the students and staff here at Heritage that you know that are interesting. Maybe they are a musician, maybe they have a unique hobby, like cooking or magic tricks, either way, make an interesting documentary about that person.

Each person will sign up for one idea, and those folks who sign up for the same idea will form groups of 2-3 people.

Documentaries usually consist of.

1. Interviews: Footage of people interviewed with a solid background or in their natural environment. Choose a location with plenty of light. Use an audio recorder.

2. B-Roll: Footage that illustrates what people are talking about. For a documentary on education, for example, you would have interviews with teachers and footage of teachers and students interacting.

3. Title Credits & End Credits with a Credit Roll.

Proposals are due by Friday, when we will sign up for groups.

EACH PERSON TURNS IN THEIR OWN EDIT OF THE GROUP FOOTAGE.

Final Group Projects are due on Friday,4/25
